China-Cambodia Bilateral relationship

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi have been meeting frequently in the last year, regardless of the Covid pandemic, signifying the development of bilateral relations between the countries. Overcoming the hardships they had faced in the past, their leaders have been cultivating the China- Cambodia relationship, which helped the countries to fight international politics and defend themselves internally legitimacy.

According to reports from Cambodia's state news agency AKP, Prime Minister Hun Sen acknowledged the big contribution from China in making a new 60,000-person capacity stadium on the outskirts of Phnom Penh and the $160 million funding for the same. He also had mentioned the other grants from China including roads, seven big bridges, and vaccines provided by China a government that helped them to fight the Covid Pandemic.

Wang also emphasized that China will amplify the volume of imports of agricultural products, thereby bringing forward Cambodia's economic growth and industrialization. He insisted on quickening the building of the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, which would accelerate the industrial investment group. Wang quoted, “Let Chinese-Cambodian friendship is steadier than iron and stronger than steel.”

Sokhonn welcomed China’s interest in helping Cambodia’s overall growth and affirmed that Cambodia also firmly supports multilateralism and the development of ASEAN-China relations.

With leaders from both countries reaching a six-point consensus regarding bilateral relations and cooperation, the concerns knuckle down to China’s construction of facilities at Ream Naval Base in Cambodia. China's military may have future basing rights there, broadening its tactical military profile greatly.
