Due to "Lack Of Transparent Data," the US is revising its travel policies for China

In response to worries about the "lack of open data" flowing from Beijing, the US government may impose new COVID-19 requirements on visitors from China, according to US officials on Tuesday. The action follows the announcement of stricter regulations for tourists from China by Japan, India, and Malaysia in the previous day, claiming an increase in diseases there. Japan has stated that it will want a negative COVID-19 test result from visitors from China. Malaysia implemented further tracking and monitoring procedures. The persistent COVID-19 outbreaks in China and the lack of transparent data, including viral genome sequence data, being reported from the PRC have raised growing worries in the international community, the officials added. As the virus spreads mostly unchecked across the 1.4 billion-person nation of China, certain hospitals and funeral homes there are currently at capacity. However, according to official figures, there was just one Covid fatality in the seven ...

Mixed Reactions from the Chinese Public to Covid Zero's End

When Covid Zero abruptly ended, the public in China experienced a range of emotions. Some expressed relief and were planning their first excursions outside in three years, while others expressed concern about the spread of illnesses. On Twitter-like Weibo, where the government's decision to halt subjecting inbound tourists to quarantine from January 8 was a top trending topic on Tuesday, one user said, "We have lost far too much in these few years with the pandemic." Wishing everyone a swift recovery, the person continued, "hoping that we may all breathe freely and go everywhere we want freely." In contrast to the desire for a speedy return to regular life, there were worries about overburdened hospitals, which have already experienced strain in Beijing and Shanghai . One Weibo user noted that "domestic infections are still on the rise." Indirectly addressing the government, the person questioned, "Isn't it obviously attempting to get everyon...

What Is CoVarScan? A New Covid-19 Test That Can Detect All Variants In Hours

United States scientists have developed a new Covid-19 test that can identify all current variants of Covid-19 accurately within hours. The test, named CoVarScan, can detect all current variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus by detecting the signatures of eight hotspots on the virus. The researchers at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center in the US published the findings in the journal Clinical Chemistry. The researchers tested samples collected from more than 4,000 patients. They found out that the test was as accurate as other methods used to diagnose the deadly virus. The test successfully differentiated between all current variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that caused Covid-19.  Jeffrey SoRelle, an assistant professor at UT Southwestern, and senior author of the study said "Using this test, we can determine very quickly what variants are in the community and if a new variant is emerging.” In most Covid-19 cases, scientists use genome sequencing to determine t...

Next Covid-19 variant will be more infectious and deadlier than Omicron, warns WHO

World Health Organization (WHO) epidemiologist and technical lead on Covid-19, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, in a recent press briefing, warned that the Covid-19 pandemic is far from over.  Kerkhove warned that the next Covid-19 variant will be more transmissible and deadlier than its predecessors. Kerkhove added that the future variants will be in some way more virulent than Omicron is now. She said that the new variant will be more transmissible because it will have to overtake what is currently circulating in the world. She added, “The big question is whether or not future variants will be more or less severe.”  She further warned that the next variant could more easily affect immunity and the effectiveness of the vaccines. However, she said to get vaccinated as it protects against severe illness and death. She added, “This was evident during the Omicron wave across the world.” Reportedly, the new variant can affect those people who are not protected by the vaccine or tho...

Europe In A Covid "Ceasefire" That Could See End Of Pandemic: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that Europe could soon enter a "long period of tranquillity" in the Covid-19 pandemic because of the high vaccination rates, the milder Omicron variant, and the end of the winter season. WHO Europe director Hans Kluge said, "This period of higher protection should be seen as a ceasefire that could bring us enduring peace.”  Many European nations recently ended Covid-19 restrictions. Denmark became the first country in Europe to lift all Covid-19 rules, including the wearing of face masks. The Covid-19 cases are still relatively high in Denmark, but the authorities said that the coronavirus no longer qualifies as a "critical threat" because of the high vaccination rates in the nation. Sweden also announced on Thursday it would lift almost all of its restrictions on 9 February. New Covid-19 cases were detected across Europe Kluge said that 12 million new coronavirus cases were detected across Europe last week...

Omicron cases surge in Australia but limited testing puts people under pressure

Covid-19 latest variant Omicron’s case is rapidly surging in Australia and even though the country is focusing on implementing stricter protocols, the health care system certainly lacks testing laboratories.  The country registered a record total of nearly 50,000 Covid-19 cases Tuesday of the latest variant and the whole population has been increasingly caught with the virus attack but people who are lining up for tests are ones who are having to suffer.  The only thing one can take positively from the spread of Omicron is the fact that it is less fatal than the prior variants; however, one cannot deny that it does need extreme precaution as it is highly transmissible. Because of this many people are trying to get their hands on rapid tests.  The self-administered rapid tests are an easier way to examine if one has a possibility of getting the virus as antigen kits are available in it but again, the reliability factor of an RT-PCR test always is higher.  People ar...

WHO warns Asia-Pacific nations to prepare for Omicron variant surge

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday warned the countries in the Asia-Pacific region to focus on their healthcare services and focus on vaccinating their people. WHO warns the Asia-Pacific region because of the Omicron variant. The new variant of Covid-19 is spreading globally. WHO designated the new covid variant B.1.1.529, named Omicron, a variant of concern. The number of people testing positive by the Omicron covid variant has increased significantly in South African countries. The new Omicron variant is much deadlier and is also spreading faster than the other variants. Reportedly vaccinated people are also getting infected by this new variant.  In a virtual briefing, Takeshi Kasai, WHO regional director for the western Pacific, said that it is clear that this pandemic is far from over. He said to adapt the way to manage this virus to better cope with future surges and reduce the health, social and economic impact. Takeshi Kasai further said, “We can adapt, so ...

India: Importance of the Reopening of Kartarpur Corridor After 1.5 years

The reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor on 18 November 2021 after 1.5 years, on the eve of the 552-birth commemoration (19 November 2021) of the founder of the Sikh religion Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, is of significant importance for several reasons. However, just months after the opening of the Corridor, it had to be shut due to the Covid-19 pandemic flare-up in the region and the world. The travel of pilgrims to Pakistan through the passage was suspended since March 2020, and the neighbouring nation restricted all travel from India due to the surge in covid cases in April 2021.  Pakistan on 9 November requested India to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor from their side and permit Sikh pilgrims to visit the holy shrine for celebrating Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthday. After the reopening announcement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted: This decision shows the immense respect of Modi govt towards our Sikh community and Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.  Kartarpur corridor reopens for pi...
