Dozens killed seeking aid in Gaza as Israel considers further military action

At least 38 Palestinians were killed overnight and into Wednesday   in the Gaza Strip   while seeking aid from United Nations convoys and sites run by an Israeli-backed American contractor, according to local health officials. The Israeli military said it had fired warning shots when crowds approached its forces. The latest deaths came as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected to announced further military action — and possibly  plans for Israel to fully reoccupy Gaza . Experts say Israel’s ongoing military offensive and blockade are already pushing the territory of some 2 million Palestinians  into famine . Another escalation of the nearly 22-month war could put the lives of countless Palestinians and around 20 living Israeli hostages at risk, and would draw fierce opposition  both internationally  and within Israel. Netanyahu’s far-right coalition allies have long called for the war to be expanded, and for Israel to eventually take over Gaz...

Israel says it’s begun daily pauses in fighting in parts of Gaza to let aid in

The Israeli military began a limited pause in  fighting in three populated areas of Gaza  for 10 hours a day as part of a series of steps that it says would give the United Nations and other aid agencies secure land routes to tackle a deepening hunger crisis. The Israel Defense Forces said it would begin a “tactical pause” in Gaza City, Deir al-Balah and Muwasi, three areas of the territory with large populations, to “increase the scale of humanitarian aid” entering the Gaza Strip. It said the pause would begin every day at 10 a.m. local time, effective Sunday, and continue until further notice. “Whichever path we choose, we will have to continue to allow the entry of minimal humanitarian supplies,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. Israel said Monday that more than 120 truckloads of food aid were distributed by the U.N. and aid agencies in the Gaza Strip, French news agency AFP reported. The military early Sunday  carried out aid airdr...

Israel’s Gaza Aid Blockade: Weaponizing Starvation or Pressuring Hamas?

Israel has faced fierce backlash after halting the entry of food and other vital supplies into Gaza on Sunday. This move, intended to pressure Hamas into accepting a new ceasefire proposal, has sparked accusations of humanitarian violations. Egypt and Qatar, mediators in the ongoing conflict, have condemned Israel for using starvation as a weapon, calling it a breach of international law. The ceasefire’s first phase, which began in January, had allowed a surge of humanitarian aid, temporarily easing the growing hunger crisis in Gaza. However, Israel’s sudden decision to cut off aid has not only reignited tensions but also drawn widespread global criticism. Hamas swiftly condemned Israel’s blockade, labeling it a “war crime and a blatant attack” on the fragile truce. The ceasefire’s second phase, which has yet to commence despite plans to start a month ago, is crucial. It entails the release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for an Israeli military withdrawal from G...
