A Matter of Identity: How Iran Views the US Election Through a Lens of Sanctions and Diplomacy

For Iranians, the US election represents more than just a change of administration; it is a question of national survival. The effects of US sanctions have permeated every aspect of life in Iran, affecting everything from food supplies to healthcare. Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign devastated Iran’s economy, leaving a lasting impact on citizens’ daily lives. Iranians like Sara Abbasi remember the years under Trump as some of the hardest they have faced, with sanctions limiting access to essential goods and causing widespread economic distress. Biden’s presidency initially raised hopes for diplomacy, yet many Iranians feel that change has been slow. Although Biden signaled an intention to revive the nuclear deal, the progress has been limited, leaving Iranians uncertain about his commitment. For citizens like Mehdi Azizi, the promises of a return to diplomacy have felt empty, as sanctions continue to impact everyday life. The disappointment has led some Iranians to question wh...

The conflict, primarily driven by Israeli military operations against Hezbollah forces, has claimed hundreds of lives in just a few days. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Biden emphasized that a "full-scale war" in Lebanon is not in anyone's interest and urged a diplomatic resolution. The bombardment has already resulted in the deaths of at least 569 people in Lebanon, with many more wounded. Among the casualties, 50 children have been reported dead, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. The attack has also spurred more violence in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli forces have killed 37 Palestinians. Despite the severity of the conflict, Biden has maintained support for Israel, urging for a ceasefire that would ensure the release of Israeli captives from Gaza. However,...

Russia will try to retrieve remnants of US drone it's accused of downing

Russia said on Wednesday it would try to retrieve the remnants of a large US MQ-9 Reaper drone that plunged into the Black Sea on Tuesday. There are conflicting statements on the aircraft downing. In claims Moscow has strongly denied, Washington said it had to bring down the drone after it became "unflyable and uncontrollable" when a Russian jet clipped its propeller. Russian security council secretary Nikolai Patrushev confirmed on state television that Moscow was trying to trace the aircraft, adding its presence in the Black Sea confirmed that the US had direct involvement in the war. Meanwhile, the US is also attempting to find the downed drone. Although Washington and London have previously gone to great lengths in order to recover their technology after crashes, the Pentagon seems more relaxed about losing the aircraft. It's an older technology and a number of them have been lost before. Moreover, attempts to retrieve the remnants next to a war zone, with Russian sh...

China hits out as US bans Chinese-owned TikTok on federal devices

China has accused the United States of overreacting after the White House on Monday gave government agencies 30 days to ensure employees had removed the Chinese-owned video app TikTok on federal devices. The order follows similar moves by the European Union and Canada in recent weeks. A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry Mao Ning accused the US of abusing state power in order to suppress foreign firms during a news briefing on Tuesday. She highlighted the importance of providing foreign companies in the US with an open, fair, and non-discriminatory environment. In recent months, a growing number of Western officials have expressed concerns over the app - owned by Chinese firm ByteDance. TikTok has been subjected to numerous allegations that it harvests users' data and hands it to the Asian government, with some intelligence agencies raising warnings against confidential information getting exposed when the app is downloaded to government-issued devices. However, TikTok...

US approves major arms sale to Saudi Arabia, UAE to combat Iran

The Biden administration has authorised two sizable arms transactions to aid Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in their defence against Iran. More than USD 5 billion in missile defence and related purchases have been made following President Joe Biden's trip to the Middle East last month, during which he visited with various regional officials in Saudi Arabia. Recent months have seen rocket assaults on Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates by Yemen's Houthi rebel movement, which is supported by Iran. Although the permits on Tuesday are for defensive weaponry, senators who backed Biden's decision to bar Saudi Arabia and the UAE from significant purchases of offensive US weapons because of their involvement in the war in Yemen may criticise them. The new sales include USD 2.2 billion for high-altitude missile defence for the UAE and USD 3 billion for Patriot missiles for Saudi Arabia that are intended for self-defence against Houthi rocket assaults. The State De...

9th Summit of Americas: Tensions over invitations and lackadaisical agenda

The White House was still completing the invitation list days before the summit in order to appease Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has vowed not to attend unless all states are invited. The backlash arose after the Biden administration decided to exclude leaders from Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela due to their dictatorial natures. Bolivian President Luis Arce, like Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has stated that he will not attend until all heads of government in the Americas are invited. The presidents of Argentina, Chile, and Honduras, among others, have joined the call for an all-inclusive conference. Furthermore, there are some who doubt the United States' decision to exclude those three countries. Many of the invited countries, according to an opinion piece published on Aljazeera, are not paragons of the democratic qualities that the US underlined in picking countries to attend the summit. 138 human rights activists were slain in Colombia, a...

AUCKUS: Biden admits of a ‘clumsy’ pact that rifted Paris and Washington

President Biden took on this opportunity to mend relations between the two nations that saw the worst of light in aftermath of AUCKUS deal.  AUCKUS, the pact between the USA, Australia, and the UK was formed to tackle going presence of China in the Indo-Pacific region. Under the deal, the US offered to share its nuclear technology with Australia, which earlier was only shared with the UK. This led to the falling out of a $66 billion submarine deal between Australia and France to build six diesel-powered submarines. France compares Biden to Donald Trump, says Biden stabbed them in the back

Never did the US president Joe Biden imagine that he would be compared to his former chair, a republican, Donald Trump on any day of his tenure but the day has come. The government of France on Thursday accused Biden of stabbing them in the back and acting like his predecessor. France said that the way Biden pushed aside Paris from a lucrative defense deal that it had earlier signed with Australia for submarines reminded them of Donald Trump. The recent deal between the US, Britain, and Australia says that they will have a security partnership for the Indo-Pacific for Australia to acquire US nuclear-powered submarines.  But this would mean that the previous ongoing deal between Australia and France where the island nation was to get French-designed submarines worth $40 billion.  The French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian did not hold back when the deal scrapping was confirmed. He said, “This brutal, unilateral, and unpredictable decision reminds me a lot of what Mr. Trump ...
