Ukraine May Soon Get US Long-Range MLRS Rocket System

Ukraine may get the United States' long-range multiple-rocket system (MLRS) amid the ongoing war. President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials have urged the US for the delivery of the MLRS to fight against the Russian forces.

Russia continues to attack Severodonetsk and the eastern Donbas region with rockets, tanks, and airstrikes. Russian long-range missiles have struck railway facilities, oil depots, and infrastructure in western Ukraine.

Russian forces vs Ukrainian forces

Russia is reported to have fired its latest multiple-rocket system against Ukrainian targets in the Kharkiv area. The Russian forces destroyed Ukrainian cities using long-range cruise missiles. The Russian forces are using US-delivered M777 howitzers, which have a range of about 25 km. The MLRS will be helpful to Ukrainian forces to counter Russia's heavy bombardments.

An M270 MLRS battery can fire a range of munitions, with the most advanced being able to hit targets up to 300 km. It can also fire shorter-range rockets with a range of around 70 km.

Can the US supply MLRS to Ukraine?

Reportedly, the United States is comfortable with giving Ukraine the MLRS but would not send the longest-range weapons compatible with the system. The US authorities are concerned about the ongoing war. They are concerned that Ukraine could use the system to hit targets inside Russia, which could further affect the situation.

The United States used the MLRS to destroy major Iraqi targets in the 1990-91 Gulf War. The United Kingdom also has the MLRS.

Russia-Ukraine war

Nearly five million Ukrainians have fled the country and thousands have died since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Ukrainian women are also bearing the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. There have been reports of sexual violence against women.

Russia started deploying big numbers of troops close to Ukraine's borders in 2021. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The festival of Diwali, often referred to as the "Festival of Lights," is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor across India.
