European Union Makes Ukraine A Candidate For EU Membership

The European Union leaders have made Ukraine a candidate for EU membership. This development could bind the country more closely to the West.

On Thursday, the EU decided to put Ukraine on a path toward EU membership to pull the war-torn country further away from Russia’s influence. However, gaining membership could take years or even decades. The EU also granted candidate status to Moldova, a tiny country that borders Ukraine.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it was a “good day for Europe.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanks the EU

Just after the latest decision, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the EU on his Twitter account. He wrote on Twitter, “Ukraine’s future is within the EU.”

He also showed his gratitude on Instagram. He wrote on Instagram, “It’s a victory. We have been waiting for 120 days and 30 years.” Ukraine applied for EU membership less than a week after Russia invaded the country on February 24.

How can Ukraine gain EU membership?

Ukraine will have to curb government corruption and adopt other reforms to gain EU membership. Countries must meet a detailed host of economic and political conditions to gain membership.

EU candidate status doesn't give a right to any country to join the bloc immediately. This process could take years.

What are the benefits of EU membership?

European Union membership can provide access to a market of 450 million consumers with free movement of labor, goods, services, and capital. The European Union is home to 450 million inhabitants. After China and India, the European Union is the most populous region in the world.

EU leaders support Ukraine

EU leaders have been backing Ukraine in its fight against Russia's invasion. The 27 members of the EU have also imposed sanctions against Russia. A prohibition has been imposed on all Russian-owned, Russian-registered, or Russian-controlled aircraft.

The festival of Diwali, often referred to as the "Festival of Lights," is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor across India. While the tradition of lighting lamps and bursting firecrackers has been an integral part of the festivities, concerns over air pollution and its adverse effects on public health have prompted authorities to regulate the use of fireworks. The Bombay High Court , in a recent decision, has imposed restrictions on the bursting of firecrackers in Mumbai during Diwali, specifying designated timings to minimize the environmental impact. In an effort to strike a balance between celebrating the festival and safeguarding the environment, the Bombay High Court issued a directive that restricts the use of firecrackers to specific time slots. The court's decision is a response to the rising concerns about air quality and noise pollution during Diwali, which often reaches hazardous levels in several Indian cities.
