North Korea Says Hundreds Of Families Ill With Unidentified Disease Amid Covid-19 Outbreak

North Korea on Friday said that hundreds of families have fallen ill with an unidentified intestinal disease amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

On Thursday, North Korea reported the eruption of an unidentified intestinal disease. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also donated his private medicines to those suffering from the new unidentified disease.

The medicine will be delivered to over 800 families suffering from the disease in southeastern Haeju city.

Acute enteric epidemic

The official KCNA (Korean Central News Agency), this week, announced a new “acute enteric epidemic” in South Hwanghae province. Reportedly, at least 1,600 people have been infected with the disease.

The reports have also sparked speculation that the disease can be cholera or typhoid, which are intestinal illnesses caused by germs via contaminated food and water. Nearly 73 people have died due to this disease.

What did the Experts Say?

Experts have warned of a major public health emergency in North Korea, which has one of the world’s worst medical care systems. Experts have also said that North Korean citizens are vulnerable to Covid-19 due to the lack of a vaccination program and poor healthcare facilities.  Experts described the ongoing situation as an "immediate public health crisis".

The healthcare system is already strained due to the outbreak of Covid-19. Reportedly, South Korea is willing to help North Korea in handling the new outbreak if Pyongyang wishes to accept it.

The Covid-19 outbreak in North Korea

North Korea announced its first coronavirus case last month. The authorities also said there had been an outbreak of the Omicron variant in the capital, Pyongyang. Subsequently, it activated a “maximum emergency epidemic prevention system” to treat Covid-positive patients.

South Korea previously offered to send vaccines to North Korea to help it deal with its coronavirus outbreak. However, North Korea did not respond.

In 2021, North Korea rejected offers from the international community to receive millions of AstraZeneca and Chinese-made jabs.

The festival of Diwali, often referred to as the "Festival of Lights," is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor across India.
