Putin’s Allies File A Case Against EU Regarding Sanctions Against Russia

More than 20 businessmen, politicians, and other individuals connected to Russia have filed a legal case against the Council of the European Union over sanctions imposed against them following the invasion of Ukraine.

Roman Abramovich, a former owner of the Chelsea football club, filed a legal case against the council. He was sanctioned in March for allegedly benefiting from his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was forced to sell Chelsea after being sanctioned by the British government.

Complaints against the EU

Reportedly, the complaints have been filed at the European Union's General Court, the bloc's second-highest tribunal. More cases are expected to be filed against the council in the coming days because the EU has announced sanctions against more than 1,100 people and more than 80 companies and entities.

Economic sanctions against Russia

The European Union imposed economic sanctions against Russia, its oligarchs, politicians, and entities after Russia launched an offensive in Ukraine on February 24. In February, the EU sanctioned five Russian banks and three billionaires. Josep Borrell Fontelles, the bloc’s foreign policy chief, said it was necessary to sanction Russia.

The US and other Western countries also sanctioned Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. However, it did not stop Russia’s aggression toward Ukraine.

EU approves a sixth sanctions package against Russia

Recently, the European Union has approved a sixth sanctions package against Russia. The council imposed an EU oil embargo. Under the measures, the EU will impose a ban on Russian crude and refined fuels that arrive on ships. The EU Council President Michel said that it will put pressure on Russia to end the ongoing war.

Nearly five million Ukrainians have fled Ukraine and thousands have died since the start of Russia’s invasion on February 24. Russia has also been accused of committing war crimes in Ukraine. The West and Ukraine have accused Putin of unprovoked aggression.
