Japan's Former Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, Shot In Chest During Election Event

 Shinzo Abe, Japan's former Prime Minister, was shot in the chest during an election speech on Friday morning. The incident took place in Nara town, in south-central Honshu, where he was addressing an election meeting ahead of Sunday's polling for the Upper House of the Parliament. He was immediately admitted to a hospital. 

According to media reports, he is in critical condition. World leaders are praying for his speedy recovery. Doctors are closely monitoring the reports and trying to save him. 

The video footage from the event went viral. In the video, Abe was seen collapsing in the street after the gunshot. Several security guards ran toward him to save him. The former PM was holding his chest when he collapsed, with his shirt smeared with blood.

What happened to Shinzo Abe?

Abe was not breathing and his heart stopped while he was being airlifted to the hospital. In the second shot, he collapsed to the ground. Reports claimed that he was in cardio and pulmonary arrest, or CPA, after being shot. 

After this shocking incident, a man was arrested. Reportedly, the man was identified as Yamagami Tetsuya, a former maritime self-defense force member. 

The attack is a shock for the Japanese people as the country has some of the strictest gun control laws. The country is considered to be one of the world’s safest and most peaceful nations.

Who is Shinzo Abe?

Shinzo Abe served as Prime Minister of Japan from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020, nearly 8 years. He was the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history. In 2020, Abe announced his resignation from the Prime Minister post on health grounds after a resurgence of chronic disease. He announced his decision to step down just four days after he had set a record for the longest-serving Japanese leader, nearly eight years.
