The UAE urges the UN to stop using ‘Islamic State’ term when referring to ISIS

The UAE urges the UN to stop using ‘Islamic State’ term when referring to ISIS

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged the United Nations (UN) to drop the name "Islamic State" when referring to ISIS during the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting in New York.

The UAE argued that terrorists should not be associated with religion. UAE Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative and Chargé d’Affaires, Mohamed Abushahab, said that organizations should not “permit ISIS and other groups to hijack a religion of tolerance and give credence to their claims.” He further added, “There is nothing Islamic about terrorism.” He also said that the UN should focus on preventing the emergence of the next generation of terrorists in the world. UAE has a great interest in the next generation and wants to protect them from terrorism. Underlining that terrorism posed a common threat to peace and security, the UAE reiterated its strong condemnation of terrorist attacks and the recruitment of children to terrorist groups. UAE also condemned the dangers and threats posed by violent non-state extremists.

He also claimed that over 25,000 children are at potential risk of radicalization at Al-Hol camp, a refugee camp close to the Syria-Iraq border. He slammed the recruitment of children and other criminal acts by the terrorist groups. Al-Hol camp houses people from Syria, Iraq, and other countries.

During the meeting, the UN recognized the threat posed by ISIS. UN counter-terrorism chief Vladimir Voronkov also said that ISIS has organized various terrorist attacks.

The UAE's efforts to eradicate terrorism

The UAE has taken important steps in the past few years to develop a legal framework to eradicate terrorism. Last year, the UAE’s Ministry of Community Development established a joint mechanism with the UAE Financial Intelligence Unit to eradicate the financing of terrorist groups.

Global financial crime watchdog The Financial Action Task Force also said that the UAE made efforts for countering the financing of terrorism (CFT) in recent years.

The UAE has also made efforts in spreading peace and tolerance in the world. The country has a long history of promoting peace in the Middle East region. Over the past few years, the UAE has participated in several peacekeeping operations in the Middle East region, including the Palestine-Israel conflict. The country has participated in peacekeeping operations to establish peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Ethiopia and Eritrea also signed the historic peace accord with the help of the UAE. Between 2011 and 2014, the UAE donated AED 8.9 billion to remove poverty across the world.

In February, UAE and India reaffirmed their joint commitment to the fight against extremism and terrorism. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the UAE’s President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan agreed to fight against terrorism, terrorist financing, and extremism.

Bangladesh Military Expresses Discontent Over Chinese Weapons; Reports 'Sub-Standard' and Faulty Parts

Bangladesh, a traditional buyer of Chinese military equipment, has raised grievances with Beijing regarding the delivery of defective components and technical malfunctions in its imported military hardware. This issue is not unique to Bangladesh, as other nations like Myanmar have also encountered problems with Chinese fighter jets, according to an ET report. Experts in the Chinese defense industry argue that Beijing lacks the expertise to manufacture highly sophisticated military hardware and is not yet considered a top-tier producer of modern defense equipment. They claim that much of China's weapon systems are based on outdated technology copied from the West. Developing countries often opt for Chinese weapons due to their lower cost compared to similar systems from Western countries. China sells arms through state-run export organizations like the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), NORINCO, and CVIC. Sources familiar with the matter told ET that the Bangladesh mil
