The UAE and Ethiopia have signed agreements on extradition cooperation and mutual legal assistance

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia have signed agreements on extradition cooperation and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.

The agreements were reportedly inked by Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, UAE’s Minister of Justice, and Ethiopia's State Minister for Justice, Ato Alemante Agidew, in attendance of several officials from both countries.

Abdullah Al Nuaimi said that the UAE Ministry of Justice is keen to strengthen cooperation in the legal and judicial fields with Ethiopia. Abdullah Al Nuaimi also stressed the importance of exchanging experiences and following up on the implementation of these agreements to serve the concept of justice and legal assistance.

Recently, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation met with Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, in the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. They reviewed bilateral cooperation and partnership between the UAE and Ethiopia. They also reviewed strategic partnerships in all sectors, including economic, investment, financial, renewable energy, food security, cultural, educational, and tourism.

Earlier, the UAE played a major role in the historic peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea, contributing to the consolidation of security and stability in the whole region.

This year, the UAE also provided humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia. It sent around 46 tons of food aid loaded in aircraft to the Tigray region to alleviate the suffering of the people. The UAE established a humanitarian air bridge to help people in Ethiopia, especially women and children. The UAE’s aid reached about 1.2 million people, including 960,000 women and children.

Ethiopia's exports to the UAE were US$169.39 million in 2020. The main products that Ethiopia exported to the UAE were gold ($71.9M) and sheep and goat meat ($36.7M).
