UAE Prez Sheikh Mohamed meets UAE astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi

Prior to the start of his six-month mission to the International Space Station, President Sheikh Mohamed paid a visit to UAE astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi at his residence.

At their residence in Al Ain's Umm Ghafa neighborhood, Dr. Al Neyadi, his father, brothers, and other family members welcomed the President.

The Emirati astronaut will launch next spring from Florida's Kennedy Space Center on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket together with two American astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut.

Dr. Al Neyadi, 41, has been preparing for the trip in Houston, Texas, as well as at facilities in Florida and California, ever since he graduated from NASA's astronaut basic training program earlier this year.

He made a brief trip back to his hometown to inform Sheikh Mohamed about his preparation up to that point and the impending expedition.

The President's visit, according to Dr. Al Neyadi, was "the absolute best incentive for me and all the people who work in the space sector in the UAE," he wrote in a tweet.

In future space missions, we pledge to represent our country as best we can, he stated.

Sheikh Mohammed was accompanied by Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad, the Presidential Court's special affairs adviser, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court.

Images published by the Emirates news agency Wam showed Sheikh Mohamed and Dr. Al Neyadi's father seated together, with Dr. Al Neyadi using an iPad to brief them.

Sheikh Mohamed gave Hazza Al Mansouri, the first astronaut from the UAE, a hero's welcome as he returned from his eight-day stay on the ISS in 2019.

The backup astronaut for the trip was Dr. Al Neyadi, who traveled back to the UAE alongside Maj. Al Mansouri.

According to Wam, Sheikh Mohamed promised that the UAE would keep advancing in modern science, artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge technology.

He also commended Dr. Al Neyadi's commitment to extending the UAE's record of success.
