Karnataka: Coffee estate owner booked for assaulting Dalit workers

According to The Hindu, the Karnataka Police on Tuesday filed a case against a coffee estate owner and his son for allegedly abusing and imprisoning a group of Dalit women labourers in the Chikkamagaluru region.

Following a complaint from one of the labourers, Arpitha, the first information report was filed.

The estate owner, Jagadish Gowda, and his son Tilak have been charged under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and different sections of the Indian Penal Code, according to officials at the Balehonnur police station.

16 labourers were allegedly imprisoned by the accused for a number of days at the coffee plantation. The workers had borrowed money from Gowda, according to Chikkamagaluru district Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth.

The owner allegedly kept the remaining men locked up since several of the men who had taken out loans had gone home.

Arpitha, the complainant, lost her unborn child after the assault, according to the police. According to the woman's mother, she was two months along.

According to a police officer looking into the situation, when he went to the estate, he noticed eight to 10 people tied up in a room. After the police questioned Gowda, they all got their freedom.

The officer stated, "They were put under house arrest for the last 15 days."

The Bharatiya Janata Party, meanwhile, refuted rumours linking Gowda to the organisation. According to BJP spokesperson Varasiddhi Venugopal, Jagadeesha is neither a party supporter nor a member. He simply backs the BJP. He is a voter just like any other.
