Mohammed Al Hammadi becomes the first Emirati president of WANO

Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), was elected by participants at the WANO Biennial General Meeting (BGM) in Prague, Czech Republic, to serve as the organization's new president.

Many consider the UAE as a benchmark for delivering civil nuclear energy to the most excellent standards of safety, quality, and transparency as newer nations aspire to join WANO to support them in building their own civil nuclear plants.

Al Hammadi emphasized his dedication to assisting both newcomer countries and current members in order to improve operational safety and dependability across the entire global fleet.

The choice of ENEC's MD & CEO as the new President, making him the first Emirati and the first Arab to hold this office, also emphasizes the UAE's ongoing cooperation with the international nuclear community and the high standards of safety, security, and performance that ENEC upholds in all facets of its nuclear program.

In his new position, he will oversee WANO, which consists of three representatives from each regional center, and encourage high-level direct participation of members in order to effectively carry out WANO's objective. Al Hammadi was elected to the WANO Atlanta Centre Governing Board in August 2015, and ENEC joined WANO in October 2010.

“The UAE is a leader in nuclear energy development, and the Barakah Plant, in close collaboration with WANO and its network of operating nations, has adopted best practices and accumulated knowledge from the worldwide nuclear energy business. Being elected president of WANO is an honour and a further demonstration of the support the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program has received from the world community,” said Al Hammadi.

He added that a wide network of international organizations has supported the UAE Programme, and it has worked with some of the most well-known nuclear energy professionals in the world.

“In order to keep WANO at the forefront of assisting members, I look forward to promoting WANO internationally, discovering additional opportunities for partnership with other significant nuclear organizations, and supporting the development of advanced nuclear technologies, such as SMRs,” he said.

In order to encourage the exchange of best practices and lessons learned related to nuclear operations across the whole worldwide fleet of civil nuclear reactors, WANO was established in 1989. With more than 120 members running more than 430 nuclear energy reactors globally, including those in the United States of America, Europe, and Asia, WANO's purpose of maximizing the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants remains unchanged today.

With the goal of assisting all nations and organizations engaged in civil nuclear operations in achieving the greatest levels of nuclear safety through the sharing of knowledge and best practices, WANO is dedicated to achieving a set of ambitious industry targets for the year 2030. Since 2010, ENEC has been an active WANO member, taking part in seminars, events, training programs, and important pre-start-up and peer reviews.

The Barakah Plant is leading the decarbonization of the UAE's power industry and is a crucial part of the country's Net Zero 2050 Strategy. Units 1 and 2 generate clean electricity continuously, while Unit 3 has recently been linked to the grid.

The UAE's clean energy ecosystem of low-carbon technologies, including the nuclear sector as a whole, is crucial for assuring the grid's dependability, effectiveness, and resilience for at least the next 60 years.

Barakah, which makes up about 20% of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program, is just the beginning. With a steady supply of clean electricity, ENEC is now concentrating on investigating and fostering strategic nuclear energy initiatives both locally and internationally that support the country of the UAE's aspirations for growth and development.

Bangladesh Military Expresses Discontent Over Chinese Weapons; Reports 'Sub-Standard' and Faulty Parts

Bangladesh, a traditional buyer of Chinese military equipment, has raised grievances with Beijing regarding the delivery of defective components and technical malfunctions in its imported military hardware. This issue is not unique to Bangladesh, as other nations like Myanmar have also encountered problems with Chinese fighter jets, according to an ET report. Experts in the Chinese defense industry argue that Beijing lacks the expertise to manufacture highly sophisticated military hardware and is not yet considered a top-tier producer of modern defense equipment. They claim that much of China's weapon systems are based on outdated technology copied from the West. Developing countries often opt for Chinese weapons due to their lower cost compared to similar systems from Western countries. China sells arms through state-run export organizations like the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), NORINCO, and CVIC. Sources familiar with the matter told ET that the Bangladesh mil

North Korea Celebrates 'New Era of a Space Power' after Satellite Launch

In a significant development, North Korea recently celebrated what it termed a 'new era of a space power' following the successful launch of a satellite. The reclusive nation's space endeavors have long been a source of international concern and scrutiny, raising questions about its technological capabilities and intentions. This latest achievement has reignited debates and speculation about North Korea's space ambitions. The satellite launch, conducted by North Korea's space agency, comes amid a backdrop of geopolitical tensions and global attention on the Korean Peninsula. The state media hailed the event as a major milestone, highlighting the successful deployment of the satellite into orbit. However, it is important to note that the international community remains skeptical, with concerns over the dual-use nature of space technology that could potentially be applied to ballistic missile systems. North Korea's pursuit of space capabilities has been a conten
