The UAE’s role in the field of climate change and the environment: Mariam Almheiri

Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), participated in the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York as part of the UAE delegation, led by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

During the meeting, she highlighted the UAE’s efforts in sustainable development, climate action, and food security. During her speech, she said that the UAE is working with the international community to face challenges at the Berlin Conference on Climate and Security, which will address climate impacts on peace and stability.

The UAE also joined the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) to End Plastic Pollution, launched in 2022, which aims to eliminate plastic pollution by 2040. After joining the Coalition, the minister said, “The UAE is dedicated to supporting the Coalition’s efforts to build a global roadmap applying an all-inclusive, sustainable, systematic, and circular approach across the full lifecycle of plastics.”

The minister also explored new synergies in the field of climate change and the environment with other countries in the run-up to the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), which the UAE is scheduled to host in 2023. The Global UN climate change conference in 2023 will talk about Climate Change and Environment.

She also shared the UAE’s experience in building resilience across all aspects at a roundtable themed ‘Joining the Effort to Drive Global Resilience’, organized by the World Economic Forum (WEF) Resilience Consortium. She highlighted the role of the UAE in proposing regulations and policies to improve food security in the country. The meeting explored various important mechanisms to improve the food security of the country. She also stressed the significance of addressing food systems in the fight against climate change. She also highlighted the work of the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate), a joint UAE-US initiative that aims to increase investment in climate-smart agricultural innovation and R&D worldwide.

Earlier this year, the UAE topped the Arab countries in the Food Security Index for the second quarter of 2022.

Emirati politicians and women have always been vocal to create a better sustainable future. Earlier, the UAE established the “Emirates Food Security Council” to coordinate and lead the National Food Security Strategy implementation in conjunction with federal and local entities with the intention to achieve food security.

Last month, the UAE announced the establishment of the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA) during New York Climate Week, which aims to scale up the UAE’s climate action. The UICCA aims to boost efforts to mitigate climate change.

Bangladesh Military Expresses Discontent Over Chinese Weapons; Reports 'Sub-Standard' and Faulty Parts

Bangladesh, a traditional buyer of Chinese military equipment, has raised grievances with Beijing regarding the delivery of defective components and technical malfunctions in its imported military hardware. This issue is not unique to Bangladesh, as other nations like Myanmar have also encountered problems with Chinese fighter jets, according to an ET report. Experts in the Chinese defense industry argue that Beijing lacks the expertise to manufacture highly sophisticated military hardware and is not yet considered a top-tier producer of modern defense equipment. They claim that much of China's weapon systems are based on outdated technology copied from the West. Developing countries often opt for Chinese weapons due to their lower cost compared to similar systems from Western countries. China sells arms through state-run export organizations like the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), NORINCO, and CVIC. Sources familiar with the matter told ET that the Bangladesh mil
