By joining and ratifying the UN Convention against Non-National Organized Crime and its protocols, the United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its commitment to helping fight the illicit trade in small guns and light weapons on a global scale.

This was stated during a speech by Mohamed Suhail Al Neyadi, Director General of the Office of Weapons and Dangerous Materials of the Supreme Council for National Security, before a workshop yesterday in Tangiers, Morocco, organized by the League of Arab States in collaboration with the European Union and the Program of Small Arms Survey, the International Criminal Police Organ, to combat the illicit trafficking and proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

In his speech, he reviewed the initiatives taken by the UAE to strengthen the capacities of law enforcement agencies and implement UN Security Council resolutions regarding the embargo on the supply of arms to any country against which a decision has been made to prevent the supply of arms, as well as preventing the diversion of weapons that enter the country's territory to a location other than their intended use. He also discussed the UAE's commitment to branding and coding weapons with unique codes.

According to Muhammad Suhail Al Neyadi, in accordance with international legitimacy intended to combat the illicit trade and proliferation of small arms and light weapons and in support of everything that would achieve international peace and security, the state has identified national focal points for coordination on international requirements.
