Air India fined RS 30 lakh by DGCA over urination incident

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a statutory body of the Indian government to regulate civil aviation in India, has imposed a fine of RS 30 lakh on Air India in connection with the urination incident.

The statutory body also imposed a fine of RS 3 lakh on the airline’s director of in-flight services. It also suspended the pilot-in-command for three months over the urination incident onboard a New York-Delhi flight last year.

Air India has reacted to DGCA’s imposition of the fine. Air India has reportedly said that relevant steps are being taken to address the issues. The flag carrier airline of India further said it respectfully acknowledged the gaps in reporting with respect to the urination incident.

Reportedly, the airline is strengthening its crews’ awareness about policies for handling different incidents. An Air India spokesperson said in a statement, “We are in receipt of today's order of the Director General of Civil Aviation and are studying the same.”

The urination incident took place on November 26, 2022, but came to the notice of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation on January 4, 2023.

A man, identified as Shankar Mishra, allegedly urinated on a woman co-passenger. Later on, the flight crew cleaned her seat and kept blankets on the seat. Hema Rajaraman, the victim, slammed the airline crew for being 'deeply unprofessional' in handling the case. She said that she wanted the man arrested.

Police had registered an FIR (First Information Report) against him on January 4 on a complaint given by the woman to Air India. The accused was arrested in Bengaluru. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia assured full investigation on the matter.

The CEO of Air India also issued an apology for handling the incident. He also rolled out a few initiatives to strengthen the security of air travelers.

As Israeli forces intensify their offensive, Netanyahu vows total control of Gaza — but the humanitarian crisis is reaching a breaking point. Will the world stand by and watch? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that Israel will “take control of all” of the Gaza Strip, signaling an unprecedented escalation in the ongoing conflict. In a video posted to Telegram, Netanyahu emphasized that military operations are advancing rapidly, with no intention of backing down. “The fighting is intense, and we are making progress,” he said, framing the offensive as necessary for Israel’s long-term security. But as international pressure mounts, his government is walking a tightrope between military dominance and global condemnation. The Israeli military has ordered mass evacuations in southern Gaza, warning residents of Khan Yunis and surrounding areas to flee immediately ahead of a devastating assault. Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee described the coming attack as ...

Israel issues latest forced evacuation order in areas in Khan Younis

The Israeli army’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, has issued the latest forced evacuation order for civilians living in nine areas in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. Adraee said that the army was expanding its operation and “intensifying sudden and concentrated firepower”. The spokesperson called on residents to evacuate westward. So-called Israeli safe zones, including Al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, are routinely attacked despite the army forcing Palestinians to move to those areas.
