China's population shrinks for the first time since 1961

China’s population has fallen down for the first time since 1961. The drop can lead to India becoming the world's most populous country by the end of this year.

According to Chinese official data, China’s birth rates plunge to record lows as its workforce ages. According to analysts, the drop can affect the country’s strained public finances.

According to China’s National Bureau of Statistics, China's population declined by around 850,000 to 1.41175 billion by the end of 2022. The worst drop since 1961 can affect China’s economy. The death rate is also the highest since 1974 during the Cultural Revolution.

According to Beijing’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the number of births was 9.56 million and the number of deaths was 10.41 million. The new figures mark the decrease in China’s population since 1961 when the country battled its worst famine. According to the United Nations, China's population can shrink by 109 million by 2050.

However, the head of the NBS, Kang Yi, said that people must not worry about China’s overall population decline because the labor supply still exceeds demand.

According to reports, during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, people chose not to have children or expand their families. Many women also refused to get pregnant. According to population experts, China's stringent zero-COVID policies that were put in place for three years also affected the country's demographic outlook.

In 2021, the Chinese government encouraged people to have more babies. The authorities rolled out various measures, including tax deductions, longer maternity leave, and housing subsidies.

Reportedly, people in China got used to small families because of the decades-long one-child policy. It was introduced in China between 1980 and 2015 to control the population. However, the government scrapped the one-child policy when the population began to decline.
