UAE: Why locals shouldn't be concerned about earthquakes in the area

According to seismology specialists, inhabitants of the UAE shouldn't be concerned about earthquakes in the area.

There is no need for concern among residents of this nation because the UAE falls under low to moderate seismicity, according to Khalifa Al Ebri, Director Department of Seismology, National Center of Meteorology (NCM), who spoke to Khaleej Times "We are safe because the UAE has low to moderate seismic activity. We are not on the seismically active belt "said he. "We experience two to three tremors on average every year. Most of these vibrations go unnoticed by people; the sensors only notice them. The country's infrastructure and buildings are unaffected by any of these disturbances."

According to Al Ebri, the nation is situated on the Arabian Tectonic Plate, which lies in opposition to the Eurasian Plate. One of the seismically active locations in the world is the Zagros mountain band, which forms the boundary of those plates. As a result, the nation occasionally suffers tremors with no consequences.

He claimed that by tracking local seismicity, the UAE seismic network/station, like many others, aids in understanding the behavior of the planet. It gathers seismic data from the GSN (Global Seismic Network) and trades seismic data with neighboring nations in order to track seismic activity both locally and worldwide. According to Alebri, no earthquake forecast has proven to be accurate anywhere in the world to date.

Since most individuals have relatives and friends abroad and are curious as to where they are in the event of an earthquake, NCM distributes local, regional, and robust worldwide earthquake bulletins to give the UAE and other societies the most recent information. Because it has specialists and seismologists that analyze the data 24/7, users of the NCM smart application can see the most recent information on earthquakes or tremors anywhere.

"In addition to receiving open data from the worldwide seismic network and the seismic stations that promptly identify an earthquake, the UAE seismic network also communicates data with its neighboring nations. But it's impossible to foresee earthquakes, unlike the weather."

Therefore, rather than attempting to make short-term predictions, seismic stations concentrate their efforts on the long-term reduction of earthquake dangers and contribute to increasing the safety of society and structures.

Because earthquakes are by their very nature unexpected occurrences, it is challenging to forecast them within a specific time frame.

The festival of Diwali, often referred to as the "Festival of Lights," is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor across India. While the tradition of lighting lamps and bursting firecrackers has been an integral part of the festivities, concerns over air pollution and its adverse effects on public health have prompted authorities to regulate the use of fireworks. The Bombay High Court , in a recent decision, has imposed restrictions on the bursting of firecrackers in Mumbai during Diwali, specifying designated timings to minimize the environmental impact. In an effort to strike a balance between celebrating the festival and safeguarding the environment, the Bombay High Court issued a directive that restricts the use of firecrackers to specific time slots. The court's decision is a response to the rising concerns about air quality and noise pollution during Diwali, which often reaches hazardous levels in several Indian cities. These timings aim to strike a balance b...
