Anti-Arab chants at nationalist Israeli March condemned by US and UN

Earlier this week, the US and UN deeply condemned all forms of anti-Arab slogans chanted by right-wing Israelis at a nationalist rally. The chants were deeply hurtful to the sentiments of the Arab people and were racist in nature.

As a part of the Flag March organized on Jerusalem Day, thousands of religious far-right Israelis joined the march on the streets of the Muslim Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City. The Flag March is organized as a part of the Jerusalem Day celebrations each year. Jerusalem Day is a commemoration of Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem in 1967.

Matthew Miller, the USA’s State Department spokesman, remarked that US unequivocally condemns any form of racist language. Moreover, Tor Wennesland, the UN Middle East envoy, criticized such chants as racist and inciteful.

The Flag March is seen as a severely provocative event by most Palestinians. For example, in 2011, this Flag March led to an 11-day conflict between Hamas, a Gaza-based militant organization and Israel. This year, the Flag March saw clashes between Palestinians and Israeli marchers and the 3000 police officers deployed for the march were unable to prevent the same. As per reports of the authorities, until now two Israelis have been detained for participating in the March armed with knives.

The Flag March came only a few days after a ceasefire that ended five days of fighting between the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a militant group in Gaza, and the Israeli forces. Despite warnings from many Palestinians, Israelis, and the international community, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, permitted the Flag March to traverse Damascus Gate and enter the streets bordering the Al Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest mosque in Islam and a recurring tension flashpoint. Moreover, groups of Israelis even entered the mosque compound as a part of the March and such acts were deeply condemned by the international community, including the United Arab Emirates.

The festival of Diwali, often referred to as the "Festival of Lights," is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor across India. While the tradition of lighting lamps and bursting firecrackers has been an integral part of the festivities, concerns over air pollution and its adverse effects on public health have prompted authorities to regulate the use of fireworks. The Bombay High Court , in a recent decision, has imposed restrictions on the bursting of firecrackers in Mumbai during Diwali, specifying designated timings to minimize the environmental impact. In an effort to strike a balance between celebrating the festival and safeguarding the environment, the Bombay High Court issued a directive that restricts the use of firecrackers to specific time slots. The court's decision is a response to the rising concerns about air quality and noise pollution during Diwali, which often reaches hazardous levels in several Indian cities.
