"What did I do?": Mississippi boy, 11, shot by officer after calling police

11-year-old Aderrien Murry, who was shot by an officer after calling police over a domestic disturbance case, has been discharged from hospital, his family says. Mississippi police arrived at his house on Saturday, then shot him in the chest, according to his mother.

While the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is probing the shocking incident, the officer involved has been placed on leave. His mother, Nakala Murry, has asked for the officer to be dismissed and charged.

Meanwhile, the child is recovering at home after being discharged from a local hospital, where he received treatment for fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, and a lacerated liver.

At a press conference on Monday, Ms Murry said she instructed her son to ask for help after the father of another of her children showed up at their house and started acting "irate".When the officer arrived, he "had his gun drawn at the front door" and asked every person inside to get out, she added.

As Aderrien turned the corner of the hallway, the officer shot at his chest, Ms Murry further mentioned, adding she covered his wounds with her hand and the officer also helped her in rendering aid until medics arrived.

"His words were: 'Why did he shoot me?', she said. The boy was placed on a ventilator at the University of Mississippi Medical Centre.

Ms Murry and Carlos Moore, her family's lawyer, have stressed the need for officials to take additional action. According to Moore, the officer involved in the incident had been named the department's "best officer".

The two and several other protesters demanded "justice" at a sit-in protest on Thursday outside City Hall. A rally has also been planned for Saturday, when the group will make demands for the officer to be dismissed and for the release of body-camera footage.

So far, police have rejected the footage request owing to the ongoing probe, according to Moore.
