Rahul Gandhi, an Indian politician and former member of the Indian Parliament, has said that India’s democracy is important for the world. Asserting that Indian democracy is a "global public good," Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has claimed that its "collapse" will have worldwide ramifications and is not in America's national interest.
At the same time, Gandhi, who is presently on a trip to the United States, has stated in several venues that the subject of democracy is an internal affair of India and that he is devoted to fighting against it.
He said at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington on Thursday, "It's our job, it's our business, and it's our work to fight the battle for democracy in India. Indian democracy is a global public good. Because India is large enough that a collapse in democracy in India will affect...will have an impact on the world.”
Gandhi also stated that the India-US relationship should be broadened and not limited to merely defense relations. He called for the expansion of the India-US relationship in various fields.
"India must do what is in its best interests. That is what will lead us...I believe that it is critical to safeguard democracy around the world. Of course, India has an opinion, and I believe it should be expressed, but I do not believe it should be considered the focus of the universe," he remarked.
He started his trip to the US on Tuesday. He met with the Indian diaspora and discussed various issues of concern, like Indian politics and democracy in India.
Gandhi also said that he did not imagine his disqualification from the Lok Sabha, constitutionally the House of the People.
