After the United States, Japan has become the second Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) partner to sign an agreement with the Republic of India for the cooperative growth of the semiconductor ecosystem.
The deal was inked in India’s national capital on Thursday by Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Yasutoshi Nishimura.
Ashwini Vaishnaw said, "The two countries have signed a memorandum for semiconductor design, manufacturing, equipment research, talent development and to bring resilience in the semiconductor supply chain.” He further said that the two countries would establish an "implementation organization" to focus on government-to-government and industry-to-industry collaboration. He further added, "Everybody wants a resilient semiconductor supply chain and in this India and Japan are very important partners.”
Reportedly, Japan has one of the top five semiconductor ecosystems in the world. The Indian minister said, "Semiconductor industry will become a USD 1 trillion industry from USD 650 billion at present.”
To match the rising demand, a large skill pool and significant expansion in numerous locations are required, he said. According to him, Japan considers India as a trusted partner with complementary qualities.
According to the Indian minister, India's strength resides in its designing ability, with over 50 designs, making it one of the best destinations for semiconductor manufacture.
He further stated that India is planning to negotiate agreements with institutions such as Georgia Tech University and has already struck one with Caldwell University to develop expertise for innovative packaging.
He added, "India can be pitched as a raw material supplier for semiconductors.” He also said that Dahej, a Village in Vagra Taluka in Bharuch District of Gujarat State, can be a raw material supplier hub for international corporations.
