Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Khoda Patel conveyed his strong disapproval of the comments made by three Maldivian ministers, labeling them as a challenge to the dignity of India. Speaking with NDTV, Patel emphasized that such remarks, including criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would not be tolerated by India. He expressed gratitude for the widespread solidarity shown by the people of India in support of the Prime Minister and Lakshadweep.
Addressing the possibility of seeking a public apology from the Maldives, Patel dismissed the idea, highlighting that the offending ministers had already faced disciplinary action from their government. He emphasized that India's values differ, and the focus should be on preventing the recurrence of such incidents. Patel commended the nation's united response, indicating that India remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the honor of its Prime Minister.
When questioned about the prospect of welcoming Maldivians to Lakshadweep, Patel affirmed the traditional openness of the country, stating that if individuals from the Maldives wish to appreciate the beauty of Lakshadweep and find happiness, it would be welcomed. He emphasized the positive aspects of cultural exchange and mutual appreciation.
The dispute originated when Maldivian ministers Maryam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid posted critical comments about Prime Minister Modi on social media. This occurred after the Prime Minister shared images and videos from his Lakshadweep visit, generating interest in the region as an alternative holiday destination. In response, the Maldives, heavily reliant on Indian tourists for revenue, swiftly suspended the ministers responsible for the controversial posts.
The incident has evolved into a political and diplomatic issue, with opposition lawmakers in the Maldives leveraging it to criticize the ruling party. Former President Mohamed Nasheed condemned the remarks as "appalling," urging his successor, Mohamed Muizzu, to distance the government from the comments. India has taken diplomatic action by summoning the Maldives envoy in Delhi to address the situation.
