Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu is reportedly at risk of impeachment, as the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has gathered adequate signatures to initiate the impeachment motion in Parliament. This development follows a tumultuous session in the Maldives Parliament, marked by disruptions and violence.
According to local media reports, the MDP, in collaboration with the Democrats, has secured the support of 34 members, including representatives from both parties, for the impeachment motion against President Mohamed Muizzu. The decision to pursue impeachment comes after a series of disturbances during parliamentary proceedings on Sunday.
In response to the disruptions, the MDP announced its intention to withhold approval for Home Minister Ali Ihusan and Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon if government lawmakers continued to obstruct parliamentary proceedings. The situation escalated to the extent that heavy police force deployment was observed within the Maldivian Parliament after a clash between political leaders on Sunday.
Videos shared by online local media portal Adhahdhu and reported by ANI captured police personnel assembling outside the Parliament complex, equipped with protective shields. The violence erupted during a crucial vote on parliamentary approval for the Muizzu government.
In footage depicting the chaotic scenes, government MPs from the PPM/PNC party were seen disrupting parliamentary proceedings and engaging in physical altercations with speakers. The videos circulating on social media showcased instances of Maldivian leaders physically assaulting each other, with one video capturing a fight between MDP MP Isa and PNC MP Abdullah Shaheem Abdul Hakeem. The confrontations included kicking, punching, and grappling, highlighting the tense political climate within the Maldives Parliament.
