Republic Day 2024: Macron arrives today; roadshow in Jaipur, Amber Fort on his itinerary

French President Emmanuel Macron, set to be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade, is scheduled to arrive today for a two-day visit to India starting in Jaipur on January 25. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will welcome him, and they will engage in a roadshow during the evening.

France holds the distinction of being India's second-largest arms supplier, having supplied Rafale jets to New Delhi. Ongoing discussions also involve multi-billion dollar deals for fighter aircraft and submarines.

Macron, making his second visit to India in six months, is expected to reach Jaipur at 2:30 pm and depart for Delhi around 9 pm, as per the Ministry of External Affairs.

During his approximately six-hour stay in Jaipur, Macron will join Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a roadshow before engaging in comprehensive discussions at the Taj Rambagh Palace hotel on various geopolitical issues and bilateral ties.

Accompanied by a delegation, Macron's Jaipur itinerary includes visits to Amber Fort, Jantar Mantar, and Hawa Mahal. Discussions between the leaders are anticipated to cover boosting cooperation in the digital domain, defense, trade, clean energy, youth exchanges, and potential easing of visa norms for Indian students. The proposed acquisition of 26 Rafale-M fighter jets and three Scorpene submarines by India is also expected to be a focal point.

On January 26, Macron will be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade, with French contingents participating. The fly-past will feature Indian Air Force jets, along with one Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft and two Rafales from the French Air Force.

Macron will attend the traditional 'At Home' reception hosted by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. He is scheduled to meet Murmu at 7:10 pm on January 26 and depart from India around 10 pm.

This meeting marks the fifth encounter between Macron and Modi since May, following Biden's unavailability, leading Macron to accept the invitation to be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade.
