“Magnifica Humanitas” Exposes the New Global Risks of AI—And the World Must Listen

A Call to Slow Down AI Before It Outpaces Humanity

Pope Leo’s new encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, is more than a religious document—it is a geopolitical and ethical warning. He argues that the world is embracing AI at a pace that outstrips our ability to manage its consequences. Slowing down is not anti-innovation; rather, it is a safeguarding mechanism for humanity. When development is pushed by profit-driven models, AI becomes a tool that amplifies inequality, manipulation and exclusion.

Digital Conflict, Disinformation and Eroding Democracy

The Pope highlights a pressing reality: AI has changed the battlefield. Cyberwarfare, algorithmic propaganda and automated military decisions are now central components of modern conflict. What once required soldiers and strategy can now be executed by code—reducing moral responsibility and inflating the ease of aggression. At the same time, misinformation corrodes democratic discourse, creating a society where truth is optional and polarization is systemic. Democracy simply cannot survive without shared facts and accountable platforms.

Workers’ Rights and Global Economic Stability at Risk

The encyclical also addresses the economic consequences of AI and automation. While tech companies promise efficiency and evolution, the Pope notes that new forms of work are not automatically better. Without global cooperation, AI could accelerate job loss, weaken workers’ protections and deepen inequality—particularly in vulnerable nations. He warns that market forces alone cannot regulate this transformation; political leadership and international coordination are indispensable. Humanity must ensure that AI serves people, not the other way around.

The festival of Diwali, often referred to as the "Festival of Lights," is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor across India. While the tradition of lighting lamps and bursting firecrackers has been an integral part of the festivities, concerns over air pollution and its adverse effects on public health have prompted authorities to regulate the use of fireworks. The Bombay High Court , in a recent decision, has imposed restrictions on the bursting of firecrackers in Mumbai during Diwali, specifying designated timings to minimize the environmental impact. In an effort to strike a balance between celebrating the festival and safeguarding the environment, the Bombay High Court issued a directive that restricts the use of firecrackers to specific time slots. The court's decision is a response to the rising concerns about air quality and noise pollution during Diwali, which often reaches hazardous levels in several Indian cities.
