Chile and Argentina’s relations are at odds after diplomatic battles between them. The breaking point was further highlighted when Argentina’s Ambassador to Chile Rafael Bielsa commented on Chilean far-right presidential hopeful José Antonio Kast as “anti-Argentine” and “xenophobic.”
The comments or such strong remarks by the leader came merely 24 hours after Kast finished first in Chile’s presidential election having secured 27.8 percent of the vote. As soon as he spoke about the community, both Buenos Aires and Santiago condemned the words.
Kast is an extreme supporter of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet making him part of public scrutiny. He still somehow managed to win the first round but for the second round, he will be facing a hardcore left-wing candidate Gabriel Boric and the round will be held on December 19.
The remarks were followed by strong criticism from many international bodies and also the Argentinian ambassador to Chile who called out the presidential hopeful’s aggressive comments on the country and went on to compare the statements and the mindset to that of former United States President Donald Trump.
He also stressed that he is scared about the future of the country if Kast happens to win the presidential elections. "If one takes public statements as an element of judgment, Kast has exhibited his anti-Argentinian," said Bielsa.
He also added that targeting Argentina by saying that it has been historically stealing territories including certain xenophobic expressions against Argentines is definitely condemnable.
