In 2011, popular uprisings toppled the authoritarian regimes in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen. Later on, the uprising became a civil war. The violence increased when the Syrian government used deadly force to crush the dissent. Subsequently, the violence escalated and Syria descended into civil war.

Yemen Civil War

The Yemeni civil war, which started in 2014, is still going on. The Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen’s official government has spent more than seven years fighting a rebel group the Houthi militia. The war has grown even more violent since the start of this year.

In early 2014, the Houthis seized control of Saada province of Yemen and then captured the nation's capital, Sanaa. It forced President Hadi to flee abroad in March 2015. Later on, the Saudi-led coalition started fighting with the Houthis. In 2021, the Houthis launched an attack on Marib. In 2022, the Houthis fired a ballistic missile at Marib again.

Afghanistan war

The Afghanistan war took place from 2001 to 2021. In 2001, the United States began carrying out airstrikes against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The US started the attack in retaliation to September 11 attacks or 9/11 attacks.

By December 2001, the Taliban had been forced from power. Former US President Barack Obama increased the U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan. In 2021, current US President Joe Biden announced that U.S. military forces would leave Afghanistan by September 2021. However, the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021.

The Iraq War

The Iraq War took place from 2003 to 2011. It began when the United States-led coalition overthrew the Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein. In 2003, the US-led coalition invaded Iraq and rapidly defeated Iraqi military and paramilitary forces. When Saddam refused to leave Iraq, the U.S. and allied forces launched an attack.

After violence began to decline in 2007, the US reduced its military presence in Iraq. The U.S. formally completed its withdrawal in December 2011.

The Ukraine Conflict

The conflict in eastern Ukraine began in April 2014 between the Ukrainian military and Russian-backed separatist rebels. Ukrainian troops pushed back the separatist lines throughout the summer.

However, in August 2014, a new pro-Russian front was opened that threatened the southern city of Mariupol in Ukraine. Later on, a cease-fire was signed in February 2015 between Russia-backed rebels and the Ukrainian military, which slowed down the conflict.
