UAE says NO to plastic, bans single-use plastic from 2026

As of January 1, 2024, the UAE will restrict the use of plastic bags and impose government regulations on the creation, distribution, and consumption of single-use goods, including biodegradable plastic bags. Additionally, starting on this date, no single-use bags of any kind shall be used.

The UAE will also implement a complete ban on the import, manufacture, and commerce of single-use plastic goods beginning January 1, 2026. These items include foam boxes, plates, food containers, plastic cups, lids, cutlery, forks, knives, and spoons (styrofoam).

The Ministerial Resolution No. 380 of 2022, which governs the use of single-use products in the nation's marketplaces, includes this provision. The decision is intended to safeguard the environment from contamination brought on by the usage of such products.

Rolls of thin bags used as stated in the guide published by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in collaboration with the relevant authorities are among the products that are excepted from the ban by the decision.

Additionally, goods that are clearly branded as being intended for export or re-export as well as those produced in the UAE using recycled components fall under this category. The trading of these goods in the nation's markets is entirely prohibited.

According to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment's directive, products created domestically from recycled materials and single-use bags are exempt from the prohibition. In consultation with the Ministry, the competent body has the ability to specify and exclude other goods and materials.

The resolution called for the implementation of policies and procedures to reduce the production and consumption of single-use items such as plastic bottles, cotton swabs, cracker bags, cigarette butts, wet wipes, balloons, and balloon sticks that are partially or entirely plastic packaged and packaging materials.

The decision also emphasized the necessity of promoting and supporting programs that enhance the usage of products with multiple uses and of making sustainable, multi-use alternatives consistently available at all retail locations.

Numerous municipal governments have started attempts to outlaw the use of plastic bags at the local level. The Environment Agency Of Abu Dhabi earlier banned the use of single-use plastic bags in the emirate in June of last year.

Dubai's Executive Council decided to prohibit single-use bags and charge a fee for their use starting on July 1, 2022, in all of the city's retail establishments.

A decision banning single-use plastic bags and other items in the Emirate as of January 1, 2024, was made by the Executive Council in Sharjah as well. The decision to forbid the use of single-use plastic bags in the emirate will go into effect on January 1, 2023, according to a separate announcement made by Umm Al Quwain's Executive Council.

As Israeli forces intensify their offensive, Netanyahu vows total control of Gaza — but the humanitarian crisis is reaching a breaking point. Will the world stand by and watch? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that Israel will “take control of all” of the Gaza Strip, signaling an unprecedented escalation in the ongoing conflict. In a video posted to Telegram, Netanyahu emphasized that military operations are advancing rapidly, with no intention of backing down. “The fighting is intense, and we are making progress,” he said, framing the offensive as necessary for Israel’s long-term security. But as international pressure mounts, his government is walking a tightrope between military dominance and global condemnation. The Israeli military has ordered mass evacuations in southern Gaza, warning residents of Khan Yunis and surrounding areas to flee immediately ahead of a devastating assault. Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee described the coming attack as ...

Israel issues latest forced evacuation order in areas in Khan Younis

So-called Israeli safe zones, including Al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, are routinely attacked despite the army forcing Palestinians to move to those areas.

UAE initiates extensive CAR T-cell treatment in the region

The United Arab Emirates has transformed the medical structure of the region as it slowly moves towards attaining leadership in medical treatments and complex procedures. It has stepped up on the list with a pioneering treatment led by Abu Dhabi. The capital has witnessed a revolutionary process that focuses on the safety and efficacy of using the CAR T-Cell treatment module especially for hematologic or blood cancers such as lymphoma, myeloma, and certain types of leukemia. This is an exemplary step in the context of the region as it is the first of its kind treatment here.  On Saturday, the Emirati nation began its experiment to locally manufacture CAR T-Cell treatment at Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center. The T-Cells will be locally reprogrammed and tested for their effectiveness so that they get better results when it comes to treating cancer.   The unit for the stem cell treatment ADSCC was founded in 2019 and since then it has grown threefold when it comes to experimenting wit...
