The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is gearing up for another scorching summer and heat wave, with temperatures set to approach 50°C this week.
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) of the UAE has forecast an increase in mercury across the country, with dust storms also expected to arrive in the Emirates. Temperatures are set to peak at 48°C in Sila, in the western region of the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi, on Thursday.
The National Centre of Meteorology said in its latest five-day bulletin that temperatures can increase further. In the coming weeks, the temperatures can increase to more than 40 degrees Celsius in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. On Friday, Dubai can expect a cooler 37°C day.
According to The National, Sweihan, a town in Al Ain, can expect the highest temperature this week. It is one of the hottest places in the UAE.
In 2021, the temperature increased to 51.8°C in Sweihan, the hottest temperature on Earth. The area is prone to heat waves. However, this time, residents can expect intense sunshine, picking up dust and sand.
The UAE has been adopting measures to protect citizens from heat waves. The UAE’s mandatory midday break for outdoor workers will start on June 15 to protect workers from the extreme summer heat and humidity.
Under the midday break, workers are prohibited from working from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. until September 15, 2023, with daily working hours limited to just eight hours. During the break, if a worker in the UAE works more than eight hours in a day, employers will face fines of up to Dh50,000.
The mandatory midday break was first introduced by the UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation in 2004. It is the 19th year that the rule has been in effect.
